UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic completes Europe’s First Stryker Mako Shoulder procedure

This week marked a significant milestone for orthopaedic surgery in Europe as Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder Surgeon Ms Ruth Delaney successfully completed Europe’s first Mako Shoulder procedure at UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic, making it the first hospital in Europe to use Stryker’s robotic-assisted technology for shoulder replacement surgery.

The Mako Shoulder platform is designed for shoulder arthroplasty procedures and combines Blueprint three-dimensional planning software, Stryker shoulder implants and Mako Smart Robotics™ technology. The system enables surgeons to create a patient-specific surgical plan before entering the operating theatre and provides real-time guidance during the procedure.

“The completion of the first Mako Shoulder case in Europe represents an important milestone as robotic-arm assisted technology continues to expand into shoulder arthroplasty," said Dr. Delaney. "The technology builds on Blueprint's strong foundation of pre-operative planning and supports accurate intraoperative execution. I am grateful to the teams at UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic, Stryker and Tekno Surgical for their collaboration and commitment in helping bring this advanced technology to our patients.”

As the partner supporting the implementation of Mako Shoulder in Ireland, Tekno Surgical was proud to work alongside UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic and Stryker to help bring this innovative technology into clinical practice. From planning and preparation through to clinical implementation, our team provided the specialist expertise and on-the-ground support required to enable this European first.

“As part of Uniphar Medtech, our focus is on enabling innovative technologies to reach clinicians and their patients through specialist expertise, local support and a deep understanding of healthcare systems, helping ensure advances like Mako Shoulder can be adopted effectively to benefit patients across Europe” said Stephen Butler, Sales Director, Tekno Surgical, part of Uniphar Medtech.

The introduction of Mako Shoulder in Europe builds on the established success of Stryker's Mako SmartRobotics™ platform in hip and knee replacement surgery. The platform has been developed to assist surgeons in planning and executing shoulder replacement procedures with greater consistency and precision.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Ms. Sinead Browne, Mako Product Specialist at Tekno Surgical for her collaboration and dedication.

Congratulations to Dr. Ruth Delaney, the Surgical team at UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic, and Stryker on reaching this important milestone. We are proud to have played a role in bringing the next generation of robotic-assisted shoulder arthroplasty to Europe.
